[at-l] Staying Dry in a Hammock

Question for you hammock hangers...

I understand you secure your hammock to a couple of trees and then, in
inclement weather, rig a tarp over all to keep dry.

Since the tarp does not encircle the tree, the webbing is exposed to rain
directly and also water running down the tree trunk.  What keeps the rain
from running downhill along the webbing and soaking your hammock/sleeping
bag from both ends?  Is wicking or osmosis a problem?
