I've seen the northern lights only once.  I was somewhere in the 
Adirondaks.  I was driving from Boston to the YMCA camp where I
worked and accidentally went to Canada (oops) so I was on the
road a wee bit late.  I saw the lights and stopped the car in the
middle of the four lane highway.  I hadn't seen anybody in a good
long while, so I figured what the hay.  I got on the hood of my
car and lay back to watch the show.

After a few minutes, another car approached from the opposite
direction.  It slowed down and stopped near me.  I figured I
was about to get a good talking to about my idiocy.  However,
the other fellow also got out and lay down on the hood of his
car.  We both watched in peacable silence.

After a while I got back in my car and drove off, though the
lights were still playing.  I'd guess the show lasted an
hour or so.  It was great.
