OT - Theoretical biology. WAS: RE: Re[2]: [at-l] Zen Joke

Hey, Shane, moderation in all things.

Conservatives tell me when I argue for educating the world about population
control, that "the entire world population could fit in a state the size of
Texas."

That suggests to me that we still have plenty of land available for trails and
wild places, especially in Maine where the trail is mostly surrounded by forest
land that until a couple of years ago sold for $200 an acre and now has inched
up to $325 an acre.

We have yet to stop building highways. Rather we do just the opposite. We build
more and more roads, and we drive bigger and bigger vehicles so we can
comfortably reach the few wild places past generations were wise enough to
preserve.

We could cut down on both expensive highways and expensive cars and reduce the
waste of scarce energy resources, by protecting the wild places that remain near
where people live.

Sorry for such a hasty reply. I could write a book on my beliefs dealing with
this issue. But in five minutes I'm due to meet a group that is building a new
trail to bypass an existing trail in one of our land trust preserves.
Unfortunately, the existing trail has been destroyed by ATVs.
