[at-l] Ticks and Pequots
Anna
I thought about the vaccine and decided not to take it because:
1) The side affects can be worse than the disease. (There may be a risk
factor called HLA-DR4+ which you should test for.)
2) It takes too long (3 shots over a year's time).
3) The efficacy is low (like 75% - some would say that's not bad. But this
means if you got 4 tick bites, on average you'll still get the disease!) and
you may need boosters.
4) Once you get the vaccine it would impossible to tell if you contracted
Lyme in the future since the antibodies to the vaccine are indistinguishable
from the antibodies to Lyme.
5) The disease is easily treatable with antibiotics.
#5 is the clincher for me, since #1-4 MAY be controversial, #5 is not.
Others have come to different conclusions. YMMV. I just watch carefully.
I got a bulls eye once, got treated and was fine.
There are a large number of web sites on the subject. Just use Google to
search for "Lymerix". Many of them are class action law firms.

Pb
