When GAMEs get to Katahdin the overwhelming majority don't haul their pack
up the hill. Thruhikers leave their backpacks on the porch of the Ranger
Cabin, borrow a day pack, and finish the last 5.2 miles of their northbound
hike. One day last last September, Ranger Bruce gave out all 30 of his
daypacks!
Same thing in the Spring, all but a few leave that
packed-for-the-100-mile/45-pound-beast below, and "slackpack" up the AT.
