Seems to me like lots of factors come into play besides the obvious 
geography/access aspect.  Time of year you sample means a lot as well 
(whether you are sampling the thru-hiker waves or not).  Even in prime thru 
hiker season (first week in March), the split was about 1/3 thrus and 2/3 
section and day hikers, which surprised me but which was also skewed by 30 
high school kids on Blood.
