Re[2]: [at-l] Cell phone connection availability

"Some apparently would have us believe that a path thru few
trees blocking the view of town is wilderness. CPs, radios, shelter angle
feeds, cd players, folks running to hostels and motels every couple days,
hikers, the trail community, and the AT itself all detract from the illusion
of wilderness. Some folks see the things they like as part of the wilderness
as being good while other things are bad. Rather than accept that the things
they like detract from the illusion of wilderness, redefine wilderness to
justify what they like, and condemn what they don't like."
 Well said!
It's been called 'the delusion of wilderness'. Many folks unfamiliar with
the AT's natural history expect a Lewis and Clark type journey through
uncharted, trackless, and untamed woodlands. However, the AT is a developed
trail through lands that were for the most part once farmed, logged, and
lived upon.
Today's AT travels through many beautiful forests, and across wondrous
mountains. The AT provides an illusion of wilderness that is delightful to
escape to. The delusion arises when some convince themselves that the
illusion is a reality. Enjoy and celebrate what we have, but don't pretend
it's something that it's not just to be argumentative.
