I had old gear and replaced it with new gear about three years ago, and
I have replaced much of that with newer gear little by little since
then. I am quite glad to have the new gear as it is a lot better (more
reliable, lighter weight, fills my need to have neat toys to play with).
Had I waited until I knew more about the current stuff, I would probably
have purchased less expensive and lighter gear in many cases. An
example, Frogg Toggs instead of Mountain Hardwear...and the list could
go on almost all the way down my gear list. Since I was buying for two
of us at the same time, I believe I could have saved at least $3k if I
knew then what I know now. I feel much more comfortable with the
choices I would make today about gear, but I know I still have a lot to
learn. If money were no object today, would I replace any of my gear?
Sure, I would be going lighter weight on a number of things starting
with my backpack and rain gear. Do I need to get anything now? I guess
that would get many different answers from many different people. From
me it is a no. I am in maintenance mode and only need to replace
clothing that is getting worn to the point it needs to be replaced, and
I try to only do that at sale or heavily discounted prices. Will I
replace anything? Sure, I saw Ryan's listing earlier today about
discounted gear and I started emailing almost instantly. I picked up
some Frogg Toggs, a windshirt, polartech pullover, and capilene boxers
all sized for my son.
