And in a memo to Kahley on the subject, RnR writes:

The radio is not part of the transformation of the Trail from a remote place
to one of
connected infrastructure. The Cphone is. When a Cphone is used to arrange
shuttles, make remote calls, or call for pizza it is a tool which serves to
reduce the previously existing level of wildness on the AT.

RnR -

You're right and I'm wrong. I don't love my family. I wish them to
needlessly be concerned about my health and whereabouts. It is far better
for the world to die like a man in the woods if immobilized somewhere. It is
a far better thing to stand by a paved roadway (natural as it is) and hitch a
ride in a natural pickup or van with total strangers than to track down a
prearranged ride that is late. Who needs (or should even want) a family,
their job or their home to return to, anyway?

Plans (no matter how basic) are for wimps. We should leave the radios and
the cell phones at home.

You win..... yeah!
