[at-l] MATC and the Eco-Challenge

"...I'm curious as to what MATC expects to happen if the race occurs...? asks
Rami.

I can't answer in any detail. But the opposition stems from a sense that the
trail should not be used for a competitive event. My knowledge is based on a
brief report during a lengthy meeting dealing with many important issues.

People who built and maintain this trail, think of it as a place for communion
with nature -- not as a place for competition. Those who fought for months to
snatch the Bigelows from the grasp of developers have similar feelings. As did
Benton MacKaye, we tend to think of the trail as a haven of wildness for
ordinary people in an increasingly civilized world, not as a playground for
those seeking ultra challenge ego trips.

Sorry, I can't be more helpful. I tend to work on longer range problems and I
didn't pay much attention to the discussion.
