*** Having lived in that area I can tell you the idea of perfect
civilization is: removing trees to keep your lawn clean; a nice suburban
grass front yard which is also a biological wasteland; spraying lawn
chemicals to keep the bugs away; a bug zapper to sterilize all forms of
non-suburban ideal away from the democratic individual suburban lot kingdom
of the home-owning private property owner and self-ruling taxpayer lord;
calling the police at any sign of wild nature, subduing the world by zoning
board and code; enforcing the protected right to be kept at a safe distance
from the homeless transient hikers not pursuing the split level existence
themselves and therefore strange...
The comic parade of children wearing signs saying keep us free from the
AT child molesters being routed through our backyards is, unfortunately, the
result of the downside of our particular suburban evolution. If you take off
the filters, you would see that Benton MacKaye knew this and saw it back
then. Where the AT conflicts with civilization-especially in this way - is
where the "AT mechanism" MacKaye planned triggers a conflict which causes man
to reflect on his relationship to nature. What is happening both here on AT-L
and in Vernon is a planned AT reaction and part of the politics some like to
avoid. It's our responsibility as AT people to make sure the outcome is one
that works for the AT, and therefore Nature, and therefore mankind...
If you asked those people if they would mind if a condo development
were built over the AT in Vernon to solve their problem they would be all for
it. To think that is an accepted view anywhere in America shows a real need
for people to impress AT conservation on a fundamental basis. Don't let
suburbicanus subdivisicus americanus undo the AT by involuntary habit...
