Actually nothing "we" can get is 100% vacumn sealed.  Sooner or later gases
migrate.  But removing as much of the air as you can does help.  One of
those home vacumn packing machines is probably better than straws or lips,
but you can't backpack 2,000 miles of extension cord, and they can be pretty
heavy.  So if you're resupplying in a town and want to repack large packages
of food or some special treat, then use a straw (from BK or MacDonalds) or
your lips on a zipping baggie: Personally I have better luck (after
practicing it for so long) with a straw.

the thing is, I don't think ziplock plastic is truly airtight.
Every time I've done this, it ends up loosing vacuum eventually,
even if the seal is zipped tight.
