It was -5 this morning in the high Smokies (Leconte) and 4 above at Newfound 
Gap. Elsewhere, it was -2 on Mount Mitchell, 0 on Grandfather (700 feet 
below the summit) and 1 at Beech Mtn (across the valley from Hump Mtn on the 
AT.) Might be colder tonight.... Still not as cold as it was in the 
mid-March cold waves of
1998 (when it was below zero on Tray Mtn on the 12th-ish or in 1996 when it 
hit -8 in Boone around the 8th-ish... Also, last year in the same area, 
March  was colder than February (average for the month). All this shows us 
is that these temps in the southern mtns are quite common for this time of 
year...
