[at-l] Informal poll - fate of Scott Farm

At the spring ATC Board meeting, the Board will reconsider the usage and
facilities of Scott Farm. A small committee is meeting next weekend to
formulate a proposal to the Board. The basic problem is that it is going to
cost a significant amount of money (> $30,000) either to retain it or
demolish it. The retain option has implied continuing costs. The high cost
item is lead paint abatement, but there are other problems as well. The lead
paint issue is driving the need to do something soon rather than eventually.

Currently Scott Farm serves several rolls such as: housing for a caretaker
and some transient AT staff, home base of the MidAtlantic Trail Crew,
including tool storage, and a training center for a number of programs such
as ridgerunners, etc. Almost all hikers passing through use it for a water
source. Many overnight on the grounds.

Now for the Poll: Consider this to be brainstorming session, so make
suggestions to the following question without being judgmental. All
reasonable suggestions will be considered. I will summarize submissions to
the committee (who are bcc'ed).

What roll should Scott Farm play in the future management of the AT?

---
For those of you who are not familiar with Scott Farm, it is a complex of
buildings consisting of an old (not historic) farm house, a barn, a large
garage, and a domitory building. It is located directly on the AT about 12
miles north of Boiling Springs, PA. The property is owned by NPS.
