Set the desired pace first, then choose the distance
based on time allowed.   The thru-hiker is constrained
by both time and distance; the section hiker can choose
how much of the trail to walk in one go.

Once you choose, of course, you need to at least
meet the planned pace, or else make contingency
plans.
