I grew up in rural PA, and it was a regular feature for the farmers to burn
the edges of their fields each year.  It was the easiest way to keep the
wildness from taking over the domesticated lands.   And that was always
followed by many kids missing a bunch of school because of the poison ivy in
the burned area getting up into the smoke and being carried to whoever was
downwind.
