made it to brownsville gap last night.  i had passed crampton gap earlier, expecting to find a phone.  there were a number of signs pointing to a phone, but no phone.  there was a juice machine - and i had some goooooood orange juice - but no phone.  i gave the place a sound cursing and moved on<g>...

met a fellow at garvey shelter named rising star (mentioned with his permission, as will always be the case when i mention someone by name) who is out for a week.  he came into harpers from dc via train, and hiked to garvey shelter.  today is a zero day for him.  i mention him because he spoke about hiking as if he'd been-there-done-that.  but he had on blue jeans, cooked on a large cannister propane stove, had a one gallon cooking pot, had metal knife-fork-spoon set, and indicated that he was not concerned with weight because he was only out for a week.    and he called hiker "trailers"...

i set a land speed record getting into harpers ferry after leaving garvey shelter.  the temps were dropping, and some of the hike was on the nice, smooth, level c&o canal towpath.  i stunk up the ATC offices for a while - where i am #1 in the 2002 photo book -  then headed for the hilltop house.  this joint aint fancy, but who needs fancy.  just had a good meal at their restaurant.  tommorrow is a zero day, and it seems a few people may be stopping by to see me...
