[at-l] springer sign-ebay

I wouldn't be too skeptical of the sign. I know of hikers that scored the
Katahdin sign because they just happened to be up there when a new sign was
put into place. They got the old sign just for carrying it down the
mountain (no small price to pay, I understand :-). I suspect the old signs
have no value to the maintainers at the time they are replaced with newer
versions.

If the old signs are of historic importance/interest, then perhaps the AT
museum should contact the maintaining clubs and request that old signs that
are replaced be turned over to the museum. If that is beyond the scope of
the maintaining club, then perhaps they could at least give the museum first
dibs on finding someone to come collect the sign on behalf of the museum -
even if it requires the museum to find someone to climb Katahdin to do so.

That all being said, there's probably very little that could be done to
verify the authenticity of the sign unless the maintaining club could
provide some insight.
