They are called cairns.  The piles of rocks are trail markers.  They are 
needed because the visibily on the trail during heavy fog or dense clouds 
would make it impossible to find the trail.  The park service and AMC must 
frequently nock down cairns built by hikers who think they are just monuments 
to hikers celebrating their presence on the mountain.   Some of the these 
piles have been there for a very long time.
