My dogs stop when they're tired or when they're intrested in smelling a
particular tree and I have enough rapport with them to allow them to hike in
a way that suits them and makes them happy.  I know their limits as well as
my own and hike in a manner that accomodates both.  I've spent 3 and 4 years
respectively rarely out of these dogs sight.  They let me know when they're
hungry or thirsty or bored.  I think that you underestimate the level of
information that dogs can communitcate.  While they are devoted to me, they
don't necessarily follow blindly.  They have their own needs and know that I
listen to those needs and provide for them.
