5 days till step off on my overly planned, highly rigid, half-thru.  www.weather.com tells me that for my start it will be 41 degrees and mostly sunny, then down to 20 degrees overnight.  after that, i can expect increased temps, plus some rain...

i am now in the stage of fiddling with my pack, trying to squeeze out ounces.  this will be the first time that i will be wearing a pack for more than 3 or 4 days at a stretch, and the first time really hiking alone.  quite a big thing for me...

so as not to cause heart failure amongst those that know me best, i'll fess up now.  saturday i have an appointment to get my beard, mustache, and curly locks shaved off.  it is a hygiene decision that i have made for this hike.  so, anyone planning on meeting me during my hike, or seeing me at trail fest or trail days, you're gonna have a tough time recognizing me. just look for the old bald f**k.  of course, that could describe any number of people on this list.  the difference with me, though, is that my hair will grow back<g>...

i'm donating my hair to www.wigsforkids.org.  a local salon here in the york area is associated with the organization, and i think it is a good deal...
