And for the same reason. The Whites are the mountain playground for a quarter of
population of the nation, as is Shenendoah. Probably 100 million people live
within a day's drive of both areas.

And both are tiny areas relative to the demand for accomodations. The AMC huts
are an artifact from an earlier age -- as are the AT shelters for that matter.
But like many historical things, people are reluctant to let them just fade
away.
