[at-l] Lekis And Trail Erosion (Sly)
Kahley,
The slicing and dicing of my post makes it that much harder to respond, but
I'll attempt it anyway.
To say that the trail and the consequent foot prints are necessary, isn't
quite true. I'm sure if you asked the 200,00,000 others in this country,
that don't use the trails, they'd agree. If you consider Leki pole holes as
unsightly as litter, you can't see the forest through the trees. I've hiked
many sections of the AT over and over and can't discern any damage caused by
Leki poles and I'm looking, obviously your mileage varies. For the most part
the trail is in super shape (as a wilderness trail), while others would have
rocks and roots removed. Certain areas need sidehilling and cribbing, others
waterbars, but to blame this on Leki pole hole damage is ludicrous. Some of
the litter last beyond our lifetime, the holes a matter of days, but I try to
do my best and carry the litter away.
Why not jump on all those 2 by 6 white or blue blazes to disturb your
wilderness experience? They certainly aren't necessary, there's a footpath
to follow and with a map you could easily get from Georgia to Maine without
the blazes.
You can bet your booty, I'll be going
"lekilekilekilekilekilekilekilekilekilekilekileki" through Montana this
summer, although not in tune with nature, the last thing I want to do is
sneak up on a griz while he's having his dinner, or when Mom is tending to
the children!
