They know not at all. There are always consequences, both positive and
negative, impossible to predict. 

The cosmic joke here is that our human cleverness is outpacing our wisdom.
The punch line is likely to be slapstick, at our expense. 

It is, after all, not a human-centered universe, though of course, we like
to pretend that it is... Nature will always have the last laugh...at her
most arrogant creation.
