[at-l] Pack weight

I started my thru-hike with a old (1975) Kelty external pack. I don't
know how much it weighed, I didn't care because I liked it. At the start
of my hike my pack weight was probably around 50lbs. including 5 days
food, 16 oz. fule and 2 liters of water. Also winter stuff. I did the
whole trail with this old but comfortable pack. I decided to replace the
hip belt and straps in Hot springs, with a more modern design Kelty set.
After going to a lighter alcohol stove summer bag, shedding my winter
clothing and a few more weight saving steps I was down to around 45
pounds fully loaded. My theroy on carring this much weight was; I'm
happy with what I carry and was not depriving myself of creature
comforts. I also looked at others who completed the trail in previous
years before the "hike lite" trend came along. They made it with heavy
packs. I'm 66 years old and wasn't in great shape when I started. If I
was going to do the trail again I would take the same stuff that I
finished with. My advise is; don't get too conserned with the weight
issue. As far as I'm conserned it doesn't realy affect the outcome of
your adventure. Grampie-N->2001
