Tom -
This list has been operating for about 6 years - everything that's related
to thruhiking has been discussed at least a dozen times. Many of us have
been through the opinions, arguments, etc so many times that we only talk
about them when someone asks a specific question. And then (sometimes) we
learn something cause the equipment and clothing is constantly changing.
Others of us have learned that the equipment is immaterial to thruhiking -
in the sense that if you have the basics - and the "attitude" - you can
finish the Trail. What kind of stove, pack, sleeping bag, water filter or
clothing is irrelevant. But most people don't believe that until they've
been there.

If you have questions, then ask them. You'll get answers - some of the
answers will fit, some won't. It's up to you to sort through them and find
the ones that fit you.

There are a lot of thruhikers here as well as a lot of long-section
hikers. You should have no problem finding answers as long as you're
willing to ask the questions. But asking the questions is YOUR job - not
ours.

A suggestion - when you ask a question, put a recognizable subject on in the
header - and then read only those posts which deal with that subject.
You'll still get some nonsense, but it'll be better than wading through all
the gun idiocy. If you're on digest mode, then don't bother with the digest
unless you WANT to read it - instead go to the instant archives at:
http://mailman.backcountry.net/pipermail/at-l/

and pick out the posts you WANT to read (by subject line). In fact, if you
look in the archives, you might find some of the answers you're looking for.
There was, for example, a post that I put out last month that defined
specifically what I'd wear/carry to start the Trail in March in Georgia.

If you're not finding what you want on at-l - then my question would be -
why aren't you asking the questions?

Walk softly,
Jim
