[at-l] Cellphones Not Required

At what point is the line drawn between acceptable technology and
"incompatible wilderness technology"? Don't jets flying overhead compromise
your sense of wilderness? What about those jet engines called stoves? Is
that noise preserving the wilderness? And what about zippers in tents???
Those damn things keep me awake at night - seriously undermining my
wilderness experience!

Now, before everyone gets uptight: Everything after the first question is
tongue-in-cheek. I hike and camp with my Scouts. Our campsites *do* sound
like jet engines and at night like motorboats (and zippers as people get up
to "go"). I'm in agreement that cell phones don't belong out there - but I
also think that cell phones don't belong in lines at McDonalds or in
elevators or on people's ears as they drive and eat and talk, etc. They are
*very* annoying. However, I have a very serious responsibility to my Scouts
and their parents. If there is an emergency, I have to take care of it in
the best way possible. One of those ways is to call for help - and to call
the parents/spouses of the persons affected. I can't tell you the number of
times I'm told "Call me if anything happens". Not that they could do much
from 100 miles away but that's what I'm instructed to do.

*** Realize the AT *was* "out west" 150 years ago. The fight is here on
the Trail to keep what we can. Cell phones are just a foot in the door for
incompatible wilderness compromising technology.

I myself have needed wilderness badly...
