Lots of folks know where I live but my doors were never locked for over 23
years. I finally put locks on the doors last Thanksgiving because we were
going away for a week and since then we lock the doors if we're going away
for the whole day or longer but we have two dogs that would deter many from
trying to enter. Not that the dogs are mean but they would bark at
strangers and that's enough to turn away some.
What I'm thinking is that like Weary, I live in a place where it's still
possible to leave your doors unlocked but despite that I feel the change in
our society. I feel it at work, when I travel and I see it in the news. I
guess that's one thing I like about the hiking community, there's still a
feeling of trust and respect that seems to have been lost in the larger
society.
