[at-l] Sly Bear Mauling Link
WOW!
Some observations on this particular attack:
From watching TV shows on bear attacks the first mistake was running
when the bear saw him. Bears can sprint incredibly fast, fast enough to catch
a dodging chipmunk. These two were going to be mauled at this point no matter
what they did. The flinging of the cubs into the air foretold the attacks
ferocity right off.
Second mistake was remaining standing. The mauled man was met head on
while standing -major mistake. A grizzly almost always makes a facial bite to
disarm its opponent. Standing and facing an attacking grizzly will almost
guarantee those results. He's lucky it wasn't much worse.
The best bet was to play dead right away on the ground with hands behind
the neck and face covered. The canister carrier should have gotten off his
best facial shot before covering up.
I would very much suspect the glancing shot the unmauled man sprayed
limited the extent of the attack on both of them. Stats have shown spray to
not completely prevent attacks but definitely limit their length and extent.
I'll go so far as to say the bear's memory of the first spraying made him
break off after the second emptying shot. It had vented its anger and
disarmed the threat so it left not wanting more sting in its eyes.
Lie towards each other and spray while the other is being attacked and
when approached. Lying down should have been done instantly because this
wasn't a predation attack. Grizzlies will respond to playing dead in this
kind of situation. Black bears won't. Grizzlies will only find it easier to
kill you if you play dead during a predation attack. Spray, spray, spray!
then duck and cover.
As for the grizzly, it's only doing what it's programed to do to
survive. It doesn't know what your capabilities are and is only acting
instinctively. You violated its kill and ignored the warning scent. After
that you didn't run fast enough to get away. It considers you as taking it
on. This was the worst of two simultaneous scenarios, carcass defense and cub
protection. What a photo!
