This is not true -- at least with respect to federal law.
It depends on whether you're carrying a firearm for what
is considered a "lawful purpose."

Furthermore, note that this law not only applies to guns,
but to all "dangerous weapons." It draws no distinction
between a handgun and a Spyderco Delica.
