Great trip report.  I can't believe you've parted ways with the Cosmobile.
Is it no longer part of the clan, or is a kid Cosmo in possession?  My
Toyota truck, with 155k, has been great.  I hope yours does as well.  I'm
going retro for my next ride - 72 Chevy stepside pickup, restoration almost
complete.

This was my first real four wheel driving experience with my newly purchased
truck ('98 
Tacoma 4x4, 4 cyl, std transmission) after 10+ years in a mini van.  I got
out, locked the hubs, and put her into 4 wheel low range.  She crept
confidently up the snowy track and we eased into the woods.
