 Perhaps because a lot of innocent people are killed by gun accidents each year
-- certainly more than by marauding bears, maybe more than by criminals. And
perhaps, because carrying a gun on much of the trail is illegal, i.e. a criminal
offense. Some of us prefer not to hike in the company of law breakers -- well at
least those who carry around lethal weapons.

 Weary
