I hike because it is safer than commuting to the office or being at the 
office most days.  I've only run across one hiker (on the MD section) that 
was a little disturbing - we said "hi", he started ranting and raving about 
police and bench warrants and was  carrying a pack that looked like he beat 
it out of town without a lot of forethought on packing light.  But we simply 
walked on rapidly and left him in the dust.

Only value I see in guns for hikers on the trail is to shoot back at the 
humters we discussed a while back (during season of course).  But then again, 
I've never run across a bear on any trail.
