heh heh heh I love these thru-hiker eating stories.
I will never forget the day I realized I was a
thru-hiker. It was like 3 days into North Carolina.
I'd just past a group of about 3 weekenders as I was
walking along. I spotted a package of the Dosidos
Girl Scout Cookies on the groun just ahead. (The 2
cookies with peanut butter between them.) I stopped.
I glanced back towards where I'd just seent he
weekenders and gave about a .0000000000001 sec pause
before bending over and picking the package up and
walking on. The cellophane was opened, but no bugs or
dirt inside. I ate the entire package at the next
spring. I think 3 more hikers came along that I gave
a cookie each to, but most of that package was mine.
My friends like that story _almost_ as much as the one
where in Southern VA I started to get real hungry and
was squirting squeeze butter in my mouth directly
after each bite of mashed potatoes...

So, that leads to my question... What stories from
your hikes consistently seem to amaze your friends?
Those 2 above are the most common ones I've found that
almost all non hikers get a kick out of. For lunch
today, we went to the food court at Tyson's Corner
mall here in Vienna, VA. As we walked out thru the LL
Bean store, we walked passed the water filters which
of course led into one friend asking about my bout
with giardia on my hike. Not exactly nice after-lunch
conversation there... ;-)

June 13-16, I'm riding my bike 330 miles from
Norfolk, VA to Washington DC to raise money
for AIDS related causes. If you want to help,
ask me how...
