[at-l] Community Spirit (Love your work!?)

It is difficult for most of us to leave home/work for 5 months for a
thru-hike. At the bottom line, a thru-hike is a 5-month unpaid
vacation.
The question to ask is whether the hiker, and those who depend on
him/her, will be better off in the long term. Or would you/they be
better of if the time and energy were spent in gaining more job-related
expertise, some additional training or training for a new career, or a
shorter vacation or sabatical.
Obviously very personal questions for which there are no 'pat'
answers. But perhaps food for thought.
