[at-l] Digital Cameras

I started taking pictures when I was 11. My dad had a darkroom. I worked
for the newspaper and yearbook in college and way too many hours in the
darkrooms there. I have a darkroom in my house. I *love* taking pictures
and really enjoy working with them in my darkroom.

However...

I bought an Olympus C2500L digital camera 2 1/2 years ago (to take pictures
for my sons' yearbook) and in short, I no longer use my darkroom. I take my
camera everywhere, including quite a few AT hikes (Kahley has some of the
pictures) and the results are wonderful. I manipulate the pictures with
Photoshop when necessary, lay them out on pages using InDesign, and print
pictures at my desk (up to 13"x19") on an Epson Photo 1200. I drowned my
camera in the Jacks River and now use an Olympus C-3040. Better images but
the delay between when I press the shutter and the picture is actually taken
in way too long. I take *lots* of pictures at a time and I've missed the
"perfect moment" a number of times with the 3040.

The costs, compared to my darkroom, are about the same. Chemicals vs ink.
Film vs Smartmedia. Photo paper vs photo paper. I do miss not being able
to change lenses but the builtin zoom/macro is ok for now.

I teach the Photography Merit Badge and the kids ask me why I have a
darkroom and have no idea what an enlarger is for!

"...Anyone want to make a case for film?"

Yup. If 3 X 5 prints are all you want, digital may be okay, though I would
be
more confident if a thru hiker who has used digital on a 2,000 mile walk
would
 speak up.

But for a slide show in a big room, nothing beats 35 mm slide film. It's
the
difference between snapshots and photography. However, I'm not a technology
nut. Why it was 1983 before I bought my first computer.
