Just before Doyle read his infamous poem he said and I'll  quote him
exactly "I don't want to offend anyone's sensibilities, but...".  Now,
the way I interpret this is that he knew that he was about to say
something offensive and wanted to excuse himself in advance.   He was
clearly aware that he was about to say something controversial.
However, excusing yourself in advance does not excuse you.
