A good friend of mine spent some time swimming in the stream in front of the Cooper Brook Leanto in Maine and got a couple leeches on him (luckily I wasn't there)... one in a very strategic place, which (from all accounts) caused a minor freak-out. I have also seen leeches (about 6" long) swimming in the lake in front of Lonesome Lake Hut in the Whites, which is also on the AT. Twilight GA>ME '98
