[at-l] Let's put together a gear list! The GREAT GEAR LIST CHALLENGE
Hello Everyone
My hiking partner for this year's thruhike has been working internationally
for several years now and in Thailand for the last 6 months. While her work
often took her to remote locations, the job would usually provide all
necessary
equipment. Oftentimes, the gear requirements were so heavy that hiring
porters
was a necessity. Consequently, her equipment needs for our thruhike are
vast.
Unfortunately, her most recent project required a month more than originally
expected. Therefore, instead of the 5 weeks of planning time, she only has
1 week to acquire equipment before we start the hike. Due to my schedule,
we don't have much time to delay our departure. I am asking for the help of
AT-L to put together a gear list that can be quickly and easily acquired in
approximately one week. While I cannot say that money is no object, I can
say that my friend has enough cash to avoid sweating the small stuff. I
realize that we are going to make someone in the local outfitters very
happy.
While gear weight is a great concern for many people, I worry that we will
not be able to acquire or make the lightest gear in the time available.
To help you with suggestions, my friend is 5'5" with a medium build. While
she
is very comfortable in the wilderness, she doesn't have much
hiking/backpacking
experience within the US or with newfangled gear. She is currently
acclimated
to the warm climates found in SE Asia and Africa and sleeps cooler. We
expect
to start a NOBO AT thru in the 3rd or 4th week of February. In addition, we
have decided upon a preference to avoid sleeping in the shelters when
possible.
Your suggestions are greatly anticipated!
