I think it will have an effect. The economy was effected and that cost jobs.
For some it will give an impetus to hike to others it will make it
financially impossible. The hikers will change. Unless you think hikers are
interchangeable with no difference on the impact different people make, the
thruhike will be effected.
If you look as though you are of middle eastern decent it could markedly
change your trip. If your spouse is in the Reserves it could change your
plans significantly.
The extensions of unemployment benefits; passed because of 9/11; could make
it possible for some to hike.
