[at-l] Lipton's/low cost trail food
My favorite "liptons" is one I assemble myself. It has been my basic trail meal
for decades.
AT HOME, combine in a sandwich-size Zip Lock bag:
1 cup of elbow macaroni or other pasta.
1/2 cup "instant" brown rice. Uncle Ben's is good. Generic brands are cheaper.
3 bouillon cubes
1 tbs dried onion flakes
1/2 tsp salt or less. (bouillon is mostly salt)
1/4 tsp pepper
a few sprinkles of basil or other spices.
ON THE TRAIL:
Unwrap the bouillon, add to rest of baggie contents in a pot.
with 3 cups of water.
Add a dash of vegetable oil or margarine if you have it.
Bring to boil and simmer for 11 minutes. Don't drain. Pasta and rice will
absorb most of the water.
(If your stove won't simmer, just take it off the heat as needed to keep the
mixture near the boiling point, but below the scorching point. Or simply add
more water and call the mixture soup.
Add whatever else as the mood and appetite demand. (jerky, chipped beef, tomato
cup a soup, summer sausage, powdered milk)
Total calories (about 700, or more depending on how much oil and other add ins
you use.
Total cost about 50 cents (plus add ins).
Total weight, 4 ounces (plus add ins.)
Note: For early days on the trail, this recipe may be too much. Later on it
will be just barely enough.
