*** Respectfully, MacKaye represented a more philosophical view of what
the AT should be. In his mind it was going to contain environmental camps
where nature could have a reason for being without any interference by man.
Avery was more pragmatic and a bulldog Trail builder. He pushed the Trail
through to make it continuous -passing on many of the wilderness features,
and MacKaye never forgave him. The compromise resulted in today's AT.
It's history, past, gone, and

*** Today's threats to the Trail make it even more pressing than it was
then. Does the Trail still "rate" backing what formed it amongst its present
users? The conflict hasn't stopped...
