The first trailnames were self chosen.  The process is now about 50/50 
between self selected and bestowed.  Some sadists who enjoy coming up with 
embarrassing trailnames will try to convince you that the bestowed 
trailname is the only 'proper' type.  If you want to choose your own, don't 
be deterred by them.  After all hiking is about having your own experience 
in your own way not someone else's.
