Brian -

I too am a chicken on water and carry the MSR (and iodine as a backup).  Only 
time I've fouled it over the past two years was at the spring on Springer and 
that was easily remedied.  I like it.

My cold bag is a NorthFace thunderhead long (I'm 6'2" and likewise wish to 
fit into the bag).  It's just shy of 3 pounds and a mummy type bag.  Works 
pretty well for me.
