Thanks for the tips on checking whether an AT thru-hike "experience' will be
covered by my insurance. I plan to get the coverage agreement in writing. 
Speaking of insurance, does anyone know any way for an individual to lower
rates thru joining a "group?" 
I have done this with the National Association of the Self-Employed, but the
rates have gone way up this year - too high for a healthy female.
