Much of the issue of getting a thru-hike to happen are
the same issues involved in basic life management.
Figuring out what is important (and with more
difficulty many times, what is not important),
dreaming, setting realistic goals, figuring out a
strategy to realize the goals.

Then...taking the most important step. 

Begin.

Most people don't want to have to deal with these
kinds of issues. It's too difficult, it's too time
consuming, I don't have a choice in the matter
anyhow...lots of excuses to use.

As such, most are bystanders watching time peter away
and opportunities dwindle. I think most individuals
want to convey the responsibility to live their life
onto to someone else's shoulders. In reality, there is
no one responsible for your life than you. You're it!
You're the one in-charge. It's your responsibility and
yours alone.

One of the things many thru-hikers realize is the
incremental effect of taking action every day toward a
lofty goal -- how small actions taken every day can
lead to big results over not so long of a period of
time.

You're twenty-five and want to be a millionare? Never
pay with coin change from your pocket and take all the
every-day coin change in your pocket and invest it
once every month in the stock market. Amazing how fast
that pocket change will add up over a period of time.

Want to get out of a terrible relationship making you
very unhappy but don't know what to do? Set a time
limit for the relationship to start working. Say, six
months. In between now and then, do what is necessary
in effort every day to turn the relationship around
and make it work. If you've done everything you can
over a six month period of time and the relationship
is still not working, end it and walk away -- go on to
something else -- because this relationship is not
going to work.

I believe the key is to know what it is you want and
then religiously every day, do something that will
make that 'thing' happen. 

Then...all of a sudden you're a northbounder arriving
at the Maine state line and...
