I'm starting to get a feel for that.

I don't feel so bad about my current setup now. I have a home,
pets, a good job. Taking a month off a year to hike should be
wonderful stress relief. When my horses die (of old age - they're
24 and 25), my house is paid off, and I can quit my job,
I'll be much more comfortable taking lots of time to hike.

In the meantime, I'll still get to do some wonderful hiking. It's
not a bad deal. And if something should happen which would prevent
me from hiking in the future, I won't have missed out on the whole
trail.
