Your question was far from inconsiderate. It is connected to the
question of why do people hike long distances - days, weeks or months
at a time. It is often associated with a major life transition, hence
that transition might not involve the family and related concerns for
some. Some find a relationship "sabbatical" a healthy idea, while
others find it a "trial separation." 

I think you will find as many answers as you find people to ask it.
