[at-l] tyvek sleeping - 2 more nights
Several of you have expressed interest in these tests:
I've spent 2 more nights on the balcony experimenting with my sleeping
bag set up. I find that as I learned more, I need less.
Originally, I slept on one WalMart closed cell pad, in a 3-layer set up:
goretex bivy, over
LL bean synthetic 30* bag, over
army-issue insulated bag liner
All are mummy style and each has a hood.
Later I put the tyvek ground cloth over it, and tried a variety of
gloves and hats, and the tyvek tarp over it. When I got the tarp over
me I finally felt *toasty warm.*
Now I've tried it without the goretex bivy, and using the hoods instead
of a hat. I didn't miss the bivy at all ( still using the tyvek tarp
thrown over). I like the hoods, maybe just a little better than a hat.
Last night I used just the sleeping bag and liner without either the
bivy OR tarp, and was fine. Not toasty warm, but temps were around 20*
or maybe even a little lower, the lowest I'd had.
What I have learned is:
- the mummy style does not bother me at all even though it is
restrictive
- hats come off, but the hood doesn't :)
- wearing gloves is important, unless using the hood
- throwing the tyvek tarp (or probably, anything, over me)
definitely gave me a few more degrees (maybe 10).
- a second pad would no doubt work the same or better
- I think I'd be fine in this down to 15* but below that I'd
probably sleep cold (wouldn't want to try)
Not planning any more sleeping tests for now. Sure have enjoyed our
rare cold weather for the chance to do these!
