Just a brief addendum. Initially most can get by with less, or even find it
impossible to eat the amount of food our exercise requires. It takes a while for
our bodies to adjust to sudden new needs. And most of us have stores of surplus
body fat that need consuming. But after a week or two or three for most hikers,
calorie needs and cravings jump dramatically.
